Namwali gets the Caine for Zambia

Zambian writer, Namwali Serpell was last night announced as the winner of the 2015 edition of the annual Caine Prize for Literature.

A first time win from the Southern African nation, the prize has in the past been won by several Nigerian writers. They include Helon Habila, S.M Afolabi, Rotimi Babatunde and Sunday Afolabi.

One Nigerian, El-Nathan John made it to the finals this year also.

Very well regarded, the first edition of the prize series which is endowed by the British bibliophile, Michael Caine, was awarded at the Zimbabwe International Bookfair held in Harare in 2000.
