Authorities in Illinois,  United States, have confirmed the death of Nigerian-born Olasinmibo Abosede, popularly known as Sinmi, whose body was discovered two weeks after she was reported missing in Naperville.

The 42-year-old mother disappeared on July 30 after leaving her home near Springbrook Golf Course for a morning walk. Surveillance footage later showed her walking away from her neighbourhood around 9:20 a.m., dressed in a black Adidas jacket, grey sweatpants, a black headscarf, and black Crocs.

Her remains were found on Thursday afternoon in a wooded section of Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, near 83rd Street and Chandelle Drive. Police said her clothing matched the description from the day she went missing.

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said: “While we believe the individual to be Sinmi, the final confirmation will be made by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to the Abosede family.”

The discovery came after weeks of extensive searches involving police officers, volunteers, and canine units. Forest Preserve District Police Chief David Pederson described the case as “heartbreaking,” adding: “Our hearts go out to Sinmi’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Investigators have ruled out foul play, but the DuPage County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The probe is being led jointly by the Naperville Police Department and the Forest Preserve District Police.
