JUST IN: Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP, poised to join ADC in Kano

Rabiu Kwankwaso

Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), signaling a major political shift ahead of his planned defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kwankwaso said his resignation takes immediate effect. He described the decision as difficult, reflecting his long association with the party, but said it was necessary due to the evolving political landscape.

“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision. However, considering the nation’s current political trajectory, I find it necessary to align with another platform that provides the best opportunity to drive meaningful change,” he stated.

Kwankwaso thanked the party leadership, including NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and all levels of party leadership for their support during his tenure. He also acknowledged the dedication of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and other supporters.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work towards a better and more prosperous future for our nation,” he added.

Though he did not initially reveal the political platform he intends to join, reports indicate that Kwankwaso is expected to formally join the ADC on Monday in Kano State. Sources within both parties said the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, will officially receive him.

The former governor is also reportedly likely to be joined by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.

The development follows a recent meeting between Kwankwaso and former PDP presidential candidate and ADC stalwart, Atiku Abubakar, in Abuja. Atiku described the visit as a courtesy call, during which both leaders discussed the nation’s political and socio-economic issues.

This move marks a significant realignment in northern Nigerian politics, with Kwankwaso’s defection expected to bolster the ADC ahead of upcoming elections.
