The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled a new international engagement initiative with the establishment of a Special Representatives Network in major global capitals, aimed at strengthening the party’s outreach to foreign governments, democratic institutions and the Nigerian diaspora.

The opposition party said the initiative would create formal channels for engaging international stakeholders on political developments in Nigeria and issues relating to democratic governance, human rights and electoral integrity.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the move was part of broader efforts to enhance transparency around Nigeria’s political environment and ensure that global actors receive credible information on developments within the country.

According to the ADC, credible representatives will be appointed as envoys in strategically selected cities across North America, Europe and Africa to serve as official points of contact between the party and international institutions.

“These representatives will engage with foreign governments, parliamentary committees, international media organisations, democracy-support institutions and Nigerian diaspora communities,” the statement said.

The party explained that the representatives would provide regular briefings on political developments in Nigeria, including issues concerning democratic governance, electoral processes, human rights concerns and alleged restrictions affecting opposition political activities.

ADC said the initiative was partly prompted by what it described as an emerging pattern of actions since July 2025 that have undermined opposition parties and threatened democratic participation.

It cited alleged attempts to destabilise opposition structures, interfere with legitimate party leadership and restrict the activities of political actors outside the ruling establishment.

The party noted that establishing an international engagement structure would help ensure that global institutions receive balanced perspectives on Nigeria’s political climate.

“The initiative is designed to ensure that international partners and democratic institutions are properly informed about developments in Nigeria’s political environment rather than relying solely on official government narratives,” the statement added.

As part of the programme, the ADC identified twelve cities for its strategic diplomatic outreach, citing their global influence and the presence of large Nigerian diaspora communities.

The cities include Washington, DC; London; Brussels; Berlin; Ottawa; Paris; Pretoria; Addis Ababa; Nairobi; Accra; Geneva; and New York.

According to the party, the representatives stationed in these locations will facilitate dialogue between the ADC and international stakeholders while promoting the party’s policy ideas and reform agenda.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen relationships between the party and diaspora communities who play active roles in shaping international perceptions of Nigeria’s political developments.

In addition to the diplomatic engagement programme, the ADC announced the creation of a National Documentation Initiative aimed at compiling verified information on incidents affecting political participation across Nigeria.

Under the proposed system, party structures at the state level will collect and document reports of threats, harassment, violent attacks, arbitrary arrests and disruptions of political activities.

The party said the information gathered would be compiled into structured reports that could be shared with both domestic and international stakeholders interested in Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.

ADC described the documentation initiative as a mechanism for promoting accountability and ensuring that concerns relating to political rights and democratic governance are properly recorded.

The party emphasised that the combined initiatives form part of a broader strategy to reinforce its credibility as a democratic political organisation committed to constitutional governance and political pluralism.

“The establishment of the Special Representatives Network represents a strategic step in strengthening our international presence, improving the flow of credible information about Nigeria’s political environment and reinforcing our commitment to democratic governance and accountability,” the statement said.

ADC maintained that by institutionalising structured engagement with international actors, it hopes to contribute meaningfully to conversations about democratic standards and the protection of political rights in Nigeria.
