Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said his decision to align with another political platform in pursuit of his presidential ambition was influenced by the growing political tension and internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Makinde stated that the lingering crisis within the PDP had forced some members of the party to explore alternative political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor, who had previously maintained that he was not desperate for political office, said he remains confident in his leadership ability and capacity to govern Nigeria if given the opportunity.

Speaking at a massive rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Makinde highlighted the achievements of his “Omituntun” administration in Oyo State, insisting that his performance in office has adequately prepared him for the presidency.

The rally, which attracted a large crowd of party loyalists and supporters, was also used to showcase candidates of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Makinde urged opposition parties across the country to unite in order to challenge the ruling party, stressing that Nigeria requires a major shift in leadership direction.

“I have no doubt about my ability to occupy the highest office in the country and deliver transformative governance for all Nigerians,” he said.

Political observers described the rally as a strategic move aimed at consolidating opposition influence in the South-West ahead of the next general elections.

However, a rival faction of the PDP aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, criticised the gathering, describing it as a meeting of aggrieved politicians rather than a credible opposition coalition.

The faction, led by Abdrahman Muhammad, argued that the rally did not represent the mainstream structure of the PDP.
