Pep Guardiola has turned down an opportunity to become the next head coach of the Italy national team, opting instead to take a break from football management and spend more time with his family.
The decision, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, was based on personal considerations rather than financial issues.
In a post on X, Romano said: “Pep Guardiola said no to Italy due to a personal decision, it’s not about a financial proposal. Guardiola will be back coaching at the right time and when he feels a new project is the best one possible; now dedicating time to family.”
Guardiola, regarded as one of football’s most successful managers, has enjoyed an illustrious career with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, winning numerous domestic league titles as well as multiple UEFA Champions League trophies.
The Italian Football Federation had identified the Spaniard as a leading candidate to take charge of the Azzurri, but the move will not materialise after the 55-year-old declined the offer.
Italian federation president Giovanni Malago confirmed that discussions had taken place with Guardiola over the vacant position before the former Barcelona and Manchester City manager decided against accepting the role.
Although he has chosen to remain out of management for now, Guardiola continues to be one of the most sought-after coaches in world football, with expectations that he will return to the touchline once he finds a project that matches his ambitions.
