United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced the death of its former chairman, Israel Ogbue, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday at the age of 99.
In a statement, the Board of Directors, management and staff of the bank described Ogbue as a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator whose life of service spanned more than six decades across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his professional career in the Federal Civil Service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later rose through the ranks at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he served in senior management positions and retired in 1988.
Following his retirement from public service, Ogbue became known for his deep expertise in corporate governance, earning board appointments in several leading institutions, including UBA. He joined the bank’s board in 2005 as a non-executive director and was appointed chairman in 2011.
He held the position until his retirement in 2013, a period the bank described as critical to its transformation. According to UBA, Ogbue provided steady and principled leadership, helping to strengthen the institution’s culture of accountability, discipline and long-term sustainability.
Beyond his corporate career, Ogbue was described as a devoted family man and mentor. He was the father of Dr Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to the Group Chairman of UBA Group, Tony Elumelu.
Known for his humility and strong Christian faith, Ogbue often credited his longevity to God’s grace and encouraged younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation, remain resilient in adversity and place their trust in God.
“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates,” the bank said. “We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and Nigeria’s corporate landscape.”
Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements, the family said, will be announced in due course.
