The Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) has elected its first female chairman since the association was founded 36 years ago.

Bukola Aro-Lambo of Leadership Newspapers emerged chairman during the association’s election held in Lagos, making history as the first woman to head the influential body of finance journalists established in 1989.

Her election is being widely regarded as a landmark moment for both the association and financial journalism in Nigeria, reflecting the increasing visibility and influence of women within the media industry.

FICAN members said Aro-Lambo’s emergence symbolises growing inclusiveness in the profession and could encourage greater female participation in economic and financial reporting.

The election also produced other members of the new executive committee expected to oversee the affairs of the association for the next tenure.

Tony Chukwuyem of New Telegraph was elected vice chairman, while Abiola Ismail of MITV emerged as general secretary.

Also elected were Ebere Obike-Franklin of Radio Nigeria as assistant general secretary, Salamatu Ejembe of the Voice of Nigeria as financial secretary, and Comfort Ekeleme of Champion Newspapers as treasurer.

Over the years, the association has played a significant role in shaping public discourse around fiscal policy, inflation, exchange rates, banking reforms and other macroeconomic developments in the country.
