Defections rock Edo as ADC gains ground, tests Okpebholo’s grip

Monday Okpebholo

Several top political appointees in Edo State have resigned from their positions to pursue elective offices in the 2027 general elections, following a directive from Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Washington Osifo, the Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, stepped down to contest for the Uhunmwode/Orhionmwon federal constituency seat, currently held by Hon. Billy Osawaru.

Also resigning was Plus Alile, the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff, who is seeking election to the Egor/Ikpoba-Okha federal constituency seat.

In addition, two board members relinquished their posts: Osaze Igbinovia of the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission and Terry Igiebor of the Edo State Audit Commission.

Governor Okpebholo had earlier instructed political appointees and civil servants to resign by March 1 if they intended to run for elective office, aiming to create a level playing field for all aspirants.

The resignations mark the beginning of political realignments in Edo State as key figures position themselves for the 2027 elections.
