Manchester City kept up their relentless pursuit of the Premier League summit with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Newcastle United, staying within touching distance of leaders Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Chelsea were forced to settle for a frustrating draw at Stamford Bridge, while Real Madrid missed the chance to extend their La Liga lead after a shock defeat to Osasuna in Pamplona.
Chelsea 1–1 Burnley: Late heartbreak at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea made a blistering start in west London, asserting dominance from kickoff. Their early pressure paid off in the fourth minute when Pedro Neto’s inviting cross was clinically dispatched by João Pedro to hand the hosts a deserved lead.
The Blues, however, failed to capitalise on several promising openings that could have put the game beyond reach. The contest shifted dramatically when Wesley Fofana received a second yellow card, reducing Chelsea to ten men and tilting the momentum in Burnley’s favour.
Languishing in 19th place, Burnley showed resilience and belief. Their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time as substitute James Ward-Prowse delivered a pinpoint corner that Zian Flemming powered home in the 93rd minute.
The 1–1 draw leaves Chelsea fourth on 45 points but ruing missed chances and costly indiscipline.
Aston Villa 1–1 Leeds: Emery’s changes rescue a point
Aston Villa were held to a 1–1 draw by Leeds United in a contest that may feel like a missed opportunity for the third-placed hosts.
Leeds stunned Villa Park in the 31st minute when Anton Stach curled home a superb free-kick from distance. Set up in a disciplined 5-4-1 formation, the visitors frustrated Villa for much of the second half and appeared poised for a vital away win.
Manager Unai Emery turned to his bench for inspiration, introducing Tammy Abraham in the 75th minute. The striker delivered in the 88th minute, finishing off a well-worked move involving Ezri Konsa to salvage a point.
Villa move to 51 points, maintaining their Champions League push, while Leeds edge up to 31.
Brighton 2–0 Brentford: Seagulls soar
Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the weekend’s standout performances with a composed 2–0 away win over Brentford.
Winless in five prior matches, Brighton delivered a clinical first-half display. Diego Gómez opened the scoring on the half-hour mark before Danny Welbeck doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time.
Manager Fabian Hürzeler will be especially pleased with his side’s defensive organisation, as they absorbed sustained second-half pressure to secure a valuable clean sheet. The win lifts Brighton to 34 points and up to 12th place.
Manchester City 2–1 Newcastle: O’Reilly inspires champions
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City claimed a crucial 2–1 victory in a match largely decided during a frenetic 13-minute spell in the first half.
Nico O’Reilly proved the difference, scoring twice — first with a sharp finish in the 14th minute and then with a powerful header before the half-hour mark. Although Erling Haaland did not add to his goal tally, his movement and link-up play were instrumental, and he forced key saves late on.
Newcastle briefly drew level through Lewis Hall but struggled to break down City’s defence thereafter. A late effort from Harvey Barnes was denied deep into added time, sealing three vital points for Pep Guardiola’s side.
City climb to 56 points, keeping the title race firmly alive and maintaining pressure on Arsenal.
Osasuna 2–1 Real Madrid: Leaders falter in Pamplona
In Spain, Real Madrid were stunned 2–1 by Osasuna at El Sadar, squandering the opportunity to extend their advantage at the top of La Liga.
Despite arriving on a five-match winning streak and sitting on 60 points, Los Blancos were undone by a determined home display. Ante Budimir converted from the penalty spot to give Osasuna the lead.
Madrid responded in the 73rd minute when Vinícius Júnior finished a move initiated by Federico Valverde. But the hosts delivered the decisive blow late on, García striking to seal a memorable victory.
The defeat sends Madrid back to the capital empty-handed ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League play-off second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, with momentum suddenly halted at a critical stage of the season.
