Carlos tops World Cup's most common names as January, Aquarius dominate player profiles

World Cup

A comprehensive study of more than 9,000 footballers who have participated in FIFA World Cup tournaments from 1930 to 2026 has revealed that “Carlos” is the most common first name in World Cup history, while January and Aquarius emerged as the most common birth month and zodiac sign among players.

The research, conducted by VegasInsider.com, examined player data from all 23 World Cup tournaments spanning nearly a century of international football to identify patterns in names, birth dates and astrological signs among players who reached the sport’s biggest stage.

According to the findings, 3,700 distinct first names were recorded among the players analysed, highlighting the global diversity of the tournament. However, “Carlos” stood out as the most frequently occurring name, having been carried by 78 players throughout World Cup history.

Among the most famous footballers bearing the name are Brazil’s legendary captain Carlos Alberto, who led his country to World Cup glory in 1970, and Colombian icon Carlos Valderrama, who represented his nation at three World Cups between 1990 and 1998.

The names Luis and José jointly occupy second place, with 61 players each. Notable figures include Uruguay’s Luis Suárez, one of the country’s most prolific forwards, and Portuguese star Luís Figo. Among the Josés are Uruguay’s José Nasazzi, captain of the inaugural World Cup-winning team in 1930, and José Altafini, who featured for Brazil during the 1958 tournament.

David ranks fourth with 51 players, while Mario completes the top five with 49 appearances. Football legends such as David Beckham, David Villa, Mario Kempes and Mario Götze have all contributed to the popularity of those names on football’s grandest stage.

January Leads Birth-Month Rankings

The study also found a strong concentration of World Cup players born during the early months of the year.

January produced the highest number of World Cup footballers, accounting for 920 players. March followed with 855 players, while February ranked third with 844.

Researchers suggest the trend may be linked to what sports scientists describe as the “relative age effect” – a phenomenon whereby children born earlier in the selection year often enjoy developmental advantages over their younger peers.

In many footballing nations, youth competitions and academy programmes use January 1 as the cutoff date for age-group eligibility. As a result, players born in January, February or March may enjoy physical and developmental advantages that increase their chances of progressing through the ranks.

Several prominent football stars illustrate the trend. Uruguay’s Luis Suárez and Belgium’s Eden Hazard were both born in January, while global superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar share a February 5 birthday.

Brazilian legend Ronaldinho and Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitić are among the most notable March-born World Cup participants.

Aquarius Emerges as Most Common Zodiac Sign

Reflecting the dominance of January and February births, Aquarius emerged as the most common zodiac sign among World Cup players, with 874 footballers falling under the sign.

Pisces followed closely with 869 players, while Capricorn ranked third with 813.

According to the researchers, the dominance of Aquarius is largely explained by its position on the calendar, covering January 20 to February 18, which overlaps with the two strongest birth months identified in the study.

Among the most celebrated Aquarius-born footballers are Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Pisces is represented by players such as Ivan Rakitić and Spain’s Fernando Torres, while Capricorn boasts names including Eden Hazard and Croatia’s 1998 World Cup star Davor Šuker.

The “Perfect” World Cup Profile

By combining the most common results across all three categories, the study identified what it described as the most statistically common World Cup player profile.

According to the data, the ideal combination would be a footballer named Carlos, born in January and under the Aquarius zodiac sign.

A spokesperson for VegasInsider said the findings demonstrate fascinating long-term patterns across generations of footballers who have competed at the highest level.

“Across all three categories, the combination that sits at number one simultaneously — the most common name, the most common birth month and the most common zodiac sign in World Cup history — is Carlos, born in January, and an Aquarius,” the spokesperson said.

Interactive Calculator for Parents

As part of the project, VegasInsider has also launched an interactive calculator that allows parents to enter their child’s first name, birth month and zodiac sign to estimate the statistical likelihood of appearing in a future World Cup.

The calculator uses historical frequencies from the study’s database of more than 9,000 players and over 3,700 distinct names to generate an implied probability based on past World Cup trends.

While the tool is intended primarily as a fun statistical exercise, it highlights the unique patterns uncovered through nearly a century of World Cup history.

The research analysed players from every World Cup tournament held between 1930 and 2026. Players who participated in multiple tournaments were counted only once, while those without recorded birth dates were excluded from calculations involving birth months and zodiac signs.

The findings offer a rare statistical snapshot of the men who have competed in football’s most prestigious tournament and reveal how certain names, birthdays and birth periods have become surprisingly common throughout World Cup history.
