Attack on Nigerians: Presidency warns South Africa of consequences

The Nigerian government has warned its South African counterpart that it would take definitive measures to ensure the safety of its nationals living in the country in the wake of continuing xenophobic attacks.

A South African mob had on Sunday and the early hours of Monday, unleashed attacks on businesses and cars belonging to Nigerians and other African nationals, killing at least three people in the process.

In a statement through its twitter handle, @NigeriaGov on Monday, the Nigerian government said the attacks have become unacceptable and measures must be taken to put a stop to it.

“The continuing attacks on Nigerian nationals and businesses in South Africa are unacceptable. Enough is enough. Nigeria will take definitive measures to ensure safety and protection of her citizens,” the statement read.

“Last week President Muhammadu Buhari met with President Cyril Ramaphosa on sidelines of #TICAD7, in Japan, to discuss this.

“Further discussions scheduled for October 2019, during Pres Buhari’s official visit to SA. In the meantime Nigeria will take further steps to ensure safety of citizens in South Africa.”
