Aston Villa ended a 44-year wait for European silverware on Wednesday night after defeating SC Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul.
The emphatic victory also secured Villa’s first major trophy in 30 years and handed manager Unai Emery a record-extending fifth Europa League title.
Among those celebrating in the stands was Prince William, a lifelong Aston Villa supporter, who was seen erupting in celebration as the Premier League side sealed a historic triumph.
Villa dominated much of the contest and nearly opened the scoring early through Morgan Rogers, whose effort forced a save from the Freiburg goalkeeper.
The breakthrough eventually came through Youri Tielemans, who volleyed home from inside the area to spark wild celebrations among Villa supporters inside the stadium.
Emiliano Buendia doubled the advantage before halftime with a curling finish, while Rogers sealed the victory in the second half with a close-range effort.
The triumph capped a remarkable season for Villa under Emery, who has transformed the Midlands club into a major force in European football.
Speaking after the match, Rogers described the victory as a historic moment for the club and its supporters.
“It’s hard to put into words. We’ve worked so hard for this. It’s a great moment for the fans and great for the club. We’ll go down in history,” he said.
Former Scotland striker and TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist praised Villa’s performance, calling it “a perfect night” for the club.
“These guys deserve it. They’ve earned it. They’ve had a fantastic season,” McCoist said.
The victory marked Villa’s first European trophy since their triumph in the 1982 European Cup era and further cemented Emery’s reputation as one of the competition’s greatest managers.
The Spaniard has now won the Europa League five times in his managerial career, having previously lifted the trophy with Sevilla FC and Villarreal CF.
Villa’s success also secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, capping what supporters are already describing as one of the greatest campaigns in the club’s modern history.
