The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Odu Ward 2, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, has suspended the senator representing Kogi East, Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho, over alleged anti-party activities.
The ward leadership said the action was taken to protect the unity, discipline, and electoral strength of the party in the area.
The suspension followed a resolution reached by the Ward Executive Committee during a meeting held on May 26, 2026, after deliberating on what party officials described as prolonged anti-party conduct by the senator.
In a suspension letter signed by the Ward Chairman, Shaibu Mohammed, the Secretary, Kabiru Mohammed, and other ward executives, the APC accused Echocho of fraternising with opposition figures and allegedly engaging in consultations aimed at defecting from the party.
According to the letter, the senator’s actions were linked to what party leaders described as dissatisfaction over APC’s internal political consultations and arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ward executives further alleged that the lawmaker’s actions were driven by what they called a “self-serving third-term agenda.”
The party also accused Echocho of working against the interests of the APC despite benefitting from the platform for nearly eight years.
Party leaders claimed the senator failed to deliver his polling unit during the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections and did not provide effective leadership during critical political contests in the state.
Speaking after the announcement, APC chieftain, Mallam Nasiru Musa, defended the suspension, describing it as necessary to preserve the integrity and stability of the party in Kogi East.
“Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho’s activities have become cancerous to the party. For eight years, he served himself and his family while the people suffered neglect and poor representation,” Musa said.
“We can no longer accommodate a senator who failed the people and has shown desperation to pull down the house simply because the party and the people rejected his third-term ambition,” he added.
Some party stakeholders in Kogi East also expressed disappointment over what they described as the senator’s poor performance and lack of visible impact on the district.
They maintained that the APC must place loyalty, service, and collective interest above personal ambition.
Party supporters in the ward reportedly commended the Ward Executive Committee for taking what they described as a courageous step to safeguard the party from internal sabotage.
The suspension letter stated that the decision should serve as a warning to party members whose actions could threaten the unity and electoral fortunes of the APC in Kogi State.
Efforts to obtain reaction from Senator Echocho were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Calls placed to his telephone line were not answered, while text messages sent to him had yet to receive any response.
