The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has joined the global Catholic Church in marking the first anniversary of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, describing his leadership as a source of renewed hope, peace, and spiritual renewal.
In a statement released from Accra, Ghana, on Thursday, SECAM said the Church in Africa was offering “joyful thanksgiving to Almighty God” as the pontiff marked one year in office on May 8, 2026, which coincides with the Feast of Our Lady of Pompeii.
The continental Catholic body said Pope Leo XIV has, since his election, demonstrated “simplicity, wisdom, compassion and evangelical courage” in guiding the global Church.
It noted that his repeated calls for peace, reconciliation, justice and human fraternity have resonated strongly across nations, particularly in regions affected by war, poverty, displacement and social inequality.
SECAM also highlighted the Pope’s apostolic visit to Africa within his first year in office, describing it as a deeply symbolic moment of communion between the Vatican and the African Church.
According to the statement, the visit went beyond pastoral engagement and served as a powerful expression of solidarity, encouragement and spiritual renewal for African Catholics.
It said the Pope’s presence strengthened the faith of believers, inspired young people, and reaffirmed the dignity of human life across the continent.
SECAM added that the pontiff’s words and gestures have already produced “abundant spiritual fruits,” including renewed missionary commitment, deeper reconciliation in divided communities, and strengthened collaboration among local churches.
The organisation further said Pope Leo XIV’s leadership has reinforced the Church’s global emphasis on synodality, unity and fidelity to the Gospel message.
Reaffirming its loyalty, SECAM said the Church in Africa remains in full communion with the Holy Father and continues to pray for his ministry.
It entrusted his leadership to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for continued strength, wisdom, good health and peace for the pontiff as he guides the Catholic Church worldwide.
The message was signed by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa and President of SECAM, who concluded with a prayerful tribute wishing the Pope many more years of fruitful service.
