Abia welcomes $145m solar manufacturing investment

Dr. Alex Otti, Abia State governor

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has welcomed plans by MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited and its Chinese partners to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing plant in the state, describing the project as a major step towards industrial growth, job creation and economic development.

The proposed facility will be located in Umuelele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, and is expected to strengthen the state’s drive to attract investment and expand its industrial base.

Speaking when he received the investors, led by Dr Oko Jaja, at the Government House in Umuahia on Thursday, Otti expressed satisfaction that the project had reached the final investment decision stage.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing a business-friendly environment and assured the investors of continued government support.

According to the governor, investments of such magnitude are critical not only because of the capital involved but also because of their wider economic benefits, including employment generation, increased productivity and improved prosperity for residents.

Otti noted that the state government had already facilitated the provision of land for the project and pledged to address any additional requirements needed for its successful implementation.

He emphasised that the state places a high premium on investors and remains committed to creating conditions that encourage businesses to thrive.

Earlier, Jaja said the delegation visited the governor to provide an update on progress towards the establishment of the solar manufacturing facility.

He disclosed that the project, being developed in partnership with Chinese technical experts, would attract about $145 million in investment and praised the Abia State Government for its support and investment-friendly policies.

Jaja further revealed that the first tranche of funding for the project is expected to be released in September 2026, marking a key milestone in its execution.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, Dennis Nwakanma, said the solar plant would be developed under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement involving the Abia State Government.

He explained that the visit of the Chinese technical partners to the proposed site was part of preliminary assessments ahead of construction and commencement of operations.

Nwakanma expressed confidence that the project would move swiftly towards implementation, noting that the factory would contribute significantly to renewable energy production and industrialisation in Abia.

Beyond manufacturing solar panels and related accessories, he said the facility would provide employment opportunities and equip young people with technical skills through training and capacity-building programmes.

The project is expected to enhance local renewable energy production while supporting the state’s broader economic diversification agenda.
