There are strong indications that Abia State will have a modern and befitting Government House ready for occupation before the end of 2026.
This became evident on Saturday, June 6, 2026, when Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, conducted journalists on an inspection tour of completed and ongoing projects within the Government House complex in Umuahia, the state capital.
Among the projects inspected were the newly constructed fit-for-purpose Governor’s Office and Official Residence, which form part of the administration’s broader effort to rebuild and modernise the seat of government.
On arrival at the project site, Governor Otti and his entourage were received by engineers from the construction company handling the project, who guided them through the facilities and provided updates on the level of work completed.
Several key projects within the Government House complex have already been completed. These include the renovation and retrofitting of the Deputy Governor’s Office, the construction of a brand-new Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), as well as the remodelling, renovation and retrofitting of the Michael Okpara Auditorium, the Protocol Building and the Banquet Hall.
Sources said the projects are part of the Government House rebuilding and upgrading initiative aimed at providing a functional and conducive working environment for government operations.
Work is also progressing steadily on other critical infrastructure within the complex, including a modern Government House Clinic, a new Government House Gate and other supporting facilities designed to transform the complex into a world-class administrative hub.
During the inspection, Governor Otti undertook a comprehensive assessment of the projects and sought clarifications on various aspects of the work. He also issued directives to ensure strict adherence to approved designs and specifications.
The construction of the new Governor’s Office and Official Residence is a major component of the ongoing rebuilding and modernisation of the Abia State Government House, which had suffered years of neglect under previous administrations.
Speaking after the inspection, Governor Otti expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, commending the contractors for the progress recorded so far. He, however, urged them to sustain the momentum to ensure the projects are completed before the end of the year.
It would be recalled that previous administrations in the state operated from rented private buildings instead of a purpose-built Government House.
With the ongoing transformation, the Otti administration says it is determined to provide Abia State with a Government House complex that reflects the dignity and status of the state.
