As part of activities marking Glaucoma Week 2026, the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau on Monday announced the commencement of this year’s free glaucoma screenings at selected primary health centres (PHCs) across the state.
The bureau urged residents to visit the nearest participating PHC or encourage friends and family to take advantage of the free eye check-up, highlighting that early detection of glaucoma can prevent irreversible blindness.
A statement from the bureau listed the PHCs where screenings are available:
Ngwoegwu (Ohuhu)
Ohiya
Arochukwu (Amanagwu)
Ahiaeke (Ndume Ibeku)
Obingwa (Akpaa Mbato)
Umudike (Ikwuano)
Uzuakoli
Olokoro (Umuoparaozara)
Alayi (Umuenyere)
Ohafia (Akanu-Ukwu)
The bureau encouraged residents to take the initiative in safeguarding their vision, emphasizing that glaucoma often progresses without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, making regular eye examinations crucial.
“Early diagnosis is key to preventing glaucoma-related blindness. We urge all residents to make use of this free service,” the statement said.
The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader commitment to improving eye health and raising awareness about preventable eye conditions among Abia communities.
