NICO to host SONTA

Nigerian Institute of Cultural Orientation, NICO, is to host this year’s Society of Nigerian Artists Conference, SONATA, which is expected to hold from 3rd to 6th August, 2015 at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja. The theme of this year’s  conference is ‘Repositioning  Nollywood For the Promotion of Nigeria’s Cultural Diplomacy  and National Security’.

The organizers NICO, promises that SONATA 2015 will go beyond a mere talkshop. NICO organizers said the workshop is designed to promote ideas, repositioning Nollywood as a veritable tool for fostering Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy. This is the first time NICO will be hosting SONATA conference. It intends to bridge the gap between SONATA and National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners NANTAP.

Convener of the conference, Dr. Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma, who is also NICO’s Executive Secretary and Visiting Associate Professor to Nasarawa State University, Keffi, NSUK in a press release said 104 abstracts have been accepted for the conference.

SONTA is an organisation of Nigeria theatre, culture, media arts and film scholars/professionals. The bulk of its members are researchers and teachers theatre, culture, film and media arts scholars in Nigerian university and colleges of education that offer theatre, media arts, film and cultural studies. SONTA  have existed since 1982 championing quality curricula, research and promotion of academic discourse and robust practice in the areas of theatre, media, film and culture. SONTA’s research interests have over the years revolved around the use of theatre, culture, film and the new media in facilitating sustainable democracy, peace building, moral and technological development in Africa.
